Quotes That May Mean Something

I am going to read The Kite Runner and post quotes that I think may have some meaning. Later, I will return and add comments.

"Rahim Kahn . . . . It was my past of unatoned sins." p. 1

"Hassan's voice whispered in my head: For you, a thousand times over." p. 2

"There is a way to be good again." p. 2

"Hassan never wanted to, but if I asked, really asked, he wouldn't deny me." p. 4
I already have ideas about this quote. I think it might have something to do with the "unatoned sins".

Questions:

Does "kite runner" have symbolic meaning?

Does the mirror reflecting light into neighbors' houses and distracting Muslims have any special meaning?

Rahim Kahn is Amir's father's business partner. He is also very close to Amir, closer than his father who is always "talking grownup talk".

Amir's grandfather had his picture taken with King Nadir Shah in 1931 two years before the king's assassination.

Hassan is my age, born in '64, and Amir is a year younger. Hassan is the son of his Amir's father's servant, Ali, and has a cleft lip. Amir's mother died in childbirth and Hassan's mother ran away less than a week after he was born. Hassan's mother, Sanaubar, had a bad reputation. Due to paralysis of his lower facial muscles, Ali always appeared to be grimacing. His eyes were the only hint of his feelings - the "windows to his soul".

Questions:
Why are the contrasts so evident?
Beautiful mother - ugly father
Faithless mother - faithful father
Rich son - poor son

Sanaubar made fun of Ali's appearance and, when Hassan was born, she made fun of him also.
Ali was orphaned at the age of five.

Older kids called Hassan's father, Ali, "boogeyman".
Soldiers spoke of his mother's infidelity.

What is important about the Hazaras?
Mogul descendants. Amir's people, the Pashtuns, had persecuted and oppressed the Hazaras.
Hazaras - Shi'a
Pashtuns - Sunni

Amir and Hassan had the same wet nurse. Amir's father told them that a very strong kinship existed between who had fed from the same breasts.

Amir's first word - Baba or Papa
Hassan's first word - Amir

"Looking back on it now, I think the foundation for what happened in the winter of 1975--and all that followed--was already laid in those first words." p. 11

Amir - age 10
Hassan - age 11

Is there truly only one sin - stealing?
We can steal the truth when we lie.
Steal a life when we kill.
Steal fairness when we cheat.
Yes, it is. If we consider stealing God's glory as the chief of these.

Amir then believes he had stolen a life when his mother died giving birth to him.

He cannot please his Baba. He likes to read and write poetry, and he doesn't like hunting and can't play soccer.
